Stillwater, Minnesota, is actively engaging in various environmental initiatives to promote sustainability and resilience within the community. These efforts encompass educational programs, conservation projects, and strategic planning to address environmental challenges.
Environmental Learning Center at Stillwater Area High School
The Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is a 55-acre area behind Stillwater Area High School, featuring diverse ecosystems such as oak forests, prairies, and coniferous plantings. The ELC serves as an outdoor classroom where students participate in activities like bird banding, small mammal tracking, and wildlife photography. Public hiking is encouraged, though dogs are not permitted to maintain the area’s ecological integrity.
Sustainable Stillwater MN
Established in 2016, Sustainable Stillwater MN (SSMN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting social, economic, and environmental resilience. SSMN has been instrumental in initiatives like the Green Business Directory, Safe Routes to School, and the adoption of the GreenStep Cities plan. The organization continues to foster community engagement through events such as the annual Valley Eco Fair, which educates residents on sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
GreenStep Cities Program
Since 2018, Stillwater has been recognized as a Minnesota GreenStep City, a program that provides a framework for cities to achieve sustainability goals. The GreenStep team collaborates with city officials to implement best practices in areas like green building, energy efficiency, and natural resource conservation. Current priorities include developing a Climate Action Plan to guide the community’s response to climate change.
Energy Action Plan
In March 2023, Stillwater joined Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy Program to develop an Energy Action Plan. This plan aims to help residents and businesses reduce energy consumption and carbon footprints. Community members are encouraged to participate in energy-saving programs, explore home and business rebates, and engage in local events focused on energy education and climate solutions.
Water Quality and Conservation Efforts
Stillwater is committed to maintaining high water quality standards. The city regularly tests for contaminants like PFAS and implements measures to ensure safe drinking water. Additionally, the community participates in initiatives such as the ‘We Are Water MN’ exhibit, which educates residents about the importance of water conservation and the unique challenges facing Minnesota’s watersheds.
Through these collective efforts, Stillwater continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, fostering a community that values and actively participates in preserving its natural resources for future generations.
