Stillwater city officials are evaluating the establishment of a social district, a designated area where patrons can openly carry and consume alcoholic beverages outdoors between local bars and restaurants. This initiative aims to stimulate economic growth and enhance the downtown experience for residents and visitors alike.
The concept of social districts has gained traction in Minnesota, with Anoka successfully piloting a similar program. In May 2024, State Senator Karin Housley introduced a bill to authorize Stillwater to implement its own social district. Housley, a Stillwater resident, believes that such a district would further boost economic development in the popular tourist destination along the St. Croix River.
Community response has been mixed. Some residents and business owners support the initiative, citing potential increases in foot traffic and sales for local establishments. Others express concerns about public safety, noise levels, and the potential impact on the city’s historic charm.
City leaders are actively seeking public input to gauge the community’s appetite for the proposed social district. Discussions are ongoing, and officials emphasize the importance of balancing economic development with maintaining the quality of life for Stillwater residents.
